Latest on Swine Flu
01 May 2009

NHS Brent is implementing the pandemic flu plan and liaising with partners like Brent Council and NW London Hospitals Trust. We are now in World Health Organisation phase five.

Along with the rest of the NHS and the government, we have been preparing for a flu pandemic for years. The Department of Health and the Health Protection Agency are taking the lead for communicating with the public. See HPA’s Questions & Answers.

The main advice to everyone is to adopt good respiratory and hygiene practices as below:

Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible

Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully Wash your hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people

Clean hard surfaces (e.g. door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product

Make sure your children follow this advice

Guidance for infection control in hospitals and primary care settings is at the DH website.

For individuals returning from affected areas who become unwell within seven days of their return, the advice remains that they should stay at home and contact their GP or NHS Direct. Individuals will be assessed and, if necessary, testing and treatment will be provided.

The Department of Health flu line is now active on:

0800 1 513 513

HPA will announce confirmed cases and cases under laboratory investigation at 3pm daily. Click on the banner below for more swine flu information.
