BRENT TEACHING PRIMARY CARE TRUST
EXPERT PATIENTS PROGRAMME

Brent Teaching PCT is running a programme aimed at improving the quality of life for people with a long-term chronic illness.

The course is designed to give people with a chronic disease the extra skills needed to manage their condition.

Chief medical officer Professor Liam Donaldson explained: “The Expert Patient Programme is about creating a stronger partnership between doctor and patient, skilling them to be equal partners and to take over some of the management of their own illness”

The programme will consist of six sessions at which self-management skills are taught and discussed. Trained tutors, who all have a long-term illness, will deliver the course.

The course is free and is mainly for Brent residents with a life-long medical condition.

What will the course cover?

- How to manage your illness and symptoms
- Dealing with pain and fatigue
- The importance of diet, nutrition and exercise
- Communicating/negotiating with family, friends
and your health professionals
- Learning how to get the most out of life
- Planning for the future
